From Russia with Love

Shadows in the sun...

Tens of thousands of Russian people seem unfazed by any cold war talk as they jet west to sunny Southern California. Often they stay in Los Angeles or Hollywood for several months and come back year after year. My informal survey of Russian friends has yielded a universal approval of LA. “I Love LA” they always tell me. This surprised me since I must admit that I have a love/hate for LA myself.

It has long been realized by the most renowned modeling agencies that Eastern Block countries tend to have a lion’s share of beautiful faces (Eastern Block is comprised of The Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany, Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary.)

As far as the annual migration, the good news for me is that I get an opportunity to photograph Russian models who roll into town.

MEET ALINA

SHOOT NOTES: This shoot was in an LA studio. Makeup: Akemi Yagi — @makeupartist_akemi. Technically, I was thinking about Hollywood glamour in these fashion portraits and continued my exploration of a cinematic approach. I styled the wardrobe.

HERE COMES KSENIIA

When I was a little kid, I was embarrassed about how many freckles I have until some random adult looked at my face and said they were “God’s kisses. Then I felt “special.”

Kseniia has a very unique look in so many ways. I could go on and on about why. One of her features is numerous lovely cute freckles.

ANNA

There is a certain perfection to Anna’s face. Her skin is flawless and features somewhat resemble a doll or mannequin, they are so perfect.
